ABOUT ME

PASSION FOR PUBLIC HEALTH

I was introduced to working in the public health field when I first interned at the IUPUI Center for Public Health in 2018. I fell in love with the idea that public health policies and programs set in place can affect so many people at once. This passion carried over past the internship and led me to reevaluate my future career goals. I decided that being a public health professional would be my desired career goal and I am now in my third semester for my Masters in Global Health and Sustainable Development and am also an IUPUI Polis Center Public Health and Policy Intern. These experiences are allowing me to develop strong skills in the public/global health field.

SKILLS AND STRENGTHS

I have superior leadership, organizational, and communication skills. I have developed and refined these skills through my many different academic, work, and volunteer experiences. Through the experiences I have developed these skills which allow me to excel at new opportunities that I take part in.

I also have a strong expertise in the Microsoft suite, community engagement, and professional writing.

I want to continue to develop these crucial skills and others such as my community engagement skills and my professional identity as I finish my M.S. in fall 2022.

PROFESSIONALISM

Professionalism is a crucial trait that includes skills such as strong communication, teamwork, leadership, and comprehension. These skills create a professional identity for which a professional can interact with others to create a cohesive workplace.

All of the experiences I completed leading up to college, as well as in my undergrad and graduate programs, have shaped my professional identity. I have taken away at least one thing from every job, internship, volunteer opportunity, and course I have completed. One of the most transformative opportunities that shaped my professional identity was becoming an LHSI ambassador. This opportunity allowed me to grow my professional skills and professional identity in major ways. My multiple internships in public health have allowed me to be familiar with the field and what is expected as a public health professional.

BIGGEST LESSON AT IUPUI

The biggest lesson I have learned at IUPUI is that a strong community begins with diverse and hard working individuals. These individuals are smart, passionate, and motivated to contribute to a common goal. While at IUPUI I found my passion of increasing the health status of those in my community and beyond. I have learned that to make a true difference in the life of these community members I must work hard and stay motivated to work hard toward this goal.

LEADERSHIP

Having a strong leader is important for any organization or team. A strong leader is one that is smart, compassionate, understanding, and organized. Through my many experiences as an undergraduate and graduate student, as well as my work experiences, I have learned many leadership skills. I have had the ability to lead team projects that have increased my teamwork skills and communication skills with my team members. I have also had the chance to lead groups of students that have given me the exposure that I can use in a future role.  I hope to continue to refine and develop my leadership skills to be a vital part of a team.

GOALS

My goals changed over my time as an undergraduate student. I focused my career goals to better reflect the person I became as I have matured more into a professional. My goal is to become a global health leader through smart program planning and intervention. This is in contrast to the more clinical side of healthcare I came into college interested in. I have developed the needed skills to complete my goals and I am excited to one day be a member of the public health community.

I am graduating with my M.S. in Global Health and Sustainable Development this fall and am excited to enter the full-time workforce. I am participating in opportunities now that will better prepare me for this transition such as working as a Public Health and Policy Intern with The Polis Center at IUPUI. I want to graduate with the required competencies to truly excel as a public health professional and these experiences will allow me to do that.
