Civic Engagment: Welcome

CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Through my many opportunities at IUPUI I was able to become more competent about diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, sexual orientations, and religions. I value, respect, and learn from these to make me a better professional and a better person. While working at the Center for Public Health Practice, I worked with a variety of different people of all backgrounds. I helped my team create relevant material for those who we touched. I continued to learn about additional cultures through both my study abroad trip to South Korea, but also my time working with a diverse population of interns as an ambassador of the LHSI program. I continue to volunteer and be civically active as I transition into the workforce. I plan to be a lifelong learner of how to always value and respect diversity in every setting.

MY CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EXPERIENCES DURING UNDERGRAD

Read about my volunteer experiences. I have had many great learning experiences and I am glad to have taken part in so many great programs.

FRESHMEN YEAR (2017-2018)

I had many freshmen year civic engagement experiences. I volunteered with IUPUI's food pantry, Paw's Pantry, to help decrease the nutritional deficiencies for IUPUI staff and students.

I worked with the Geography Education Network of Indiana to help teach others about Indiana geography and culture at the Indianapolis International Festival.

I helped Growing Places Indy build a urban garden to provide low cost vegetables for the city's residents.

I also coached a YMCA youth basketball team to help teach important teamwork and communication skills.

SOPHOMORE YEAR (2018-2019)

I helped the Indianapolis Washington Township Lions Club by serving at their Corn Stand at the 2018 Indiana State Fair. The profits at this stand helped programs at the School for the Blind in Indianapolis.

I worked with the Indy Parks Department to lead a section of their Huantless Halloween program at Holliday Park.

I worked with CEES Service Learning to help repopulate native grass and tree species at Holliday Park. This program serves to stop invading species from overrunning native ones in the park.

I volunteered for The Center for Public Health Practice to help operate a Poverty Simulation. This opportunity helps teach people about the hardships of poverty and how to help those in need.

JUNIOR YEAR (2019-2020)

The main opportunity I was involved with my third year was the IUPUI Ability Fitness Clinic. This program helps adults and teens with disabilities achieve personal fitness and health goals. I work one-on-one with a client who I saw every week for 8 weeks. We worked to improve their fitness and health goals together.

I stayed engaged on campus through my on campus job at LHSI as an intern ambassador. I connected with interns of the program, Alumni as the Alumni coordinator, and health professionals at IUPUI.

SENIOR YEAR (2020-2021

With the COVID pandemic, it was difficult to find in-person volunteer experiences. This is why I worked with OpeenStreet Maps. This organization is working to create an accurate, free, and open map for people to use. It is specifically looking to help improve the data for countries with little infrastructure so better plans can be made with regard to humanitarian and public health programs.

MY NEXT CHAPTER IN SERVICE

2021 and beyond

Civic Engagment: Text

I have continued to volunteer in numerous organizations including with the Warren Township school system with activities such as making Thanksgiving meals for families and staffing activity days for students.

I also volunteered with IUPUI Health and Wellness Promotion for their community pickup day. I traveled around the IUPUI campus and picked up trash to ensure a clean environment.
